How to Add a Custom Domain

Connect your domain to SPRL in a few simple steps.

Overview

Adding a Custom Domain allows you to generate branded short links using your own domain or subdomain. Once your domain has been configured, verified, and activated, it becomes available whenever you create new short URLs.

This guide walks you through the complete process of adding a custom domain to your SPRL account.

Good to Know:
Before adding a domain, ensure you already own it and have access to manage its DNS records through your domain provider.

Before You Begin

Make sure the following requirements are met before starting the setup.

Requirement Description
Domain Ownership You own the domain or subdomain you want to use.
DNS Access You can edit DNS records with your domain registrar or DNS provider.
Dedicated Domain The domain should be intended for branded short links.

Step 1: Open the Custom Domain Page

  1. Sign in to your SPRL account.
  2. Navigate to Dashboard → Custom Domains.
  3. Click Add Custom Domain.

Step 2: Choose Your Domain Type

Select the type of domain you want to configure.

Option When to Use
Primary Domain Use a domain dedicated to branded short links.
Sub Domain Use a dedicated subdomain such as go.example.com while keeping your main website unchanged.

Step 3: Enter Your Domain

Enter the fully qualified domain or subdomain you want to use for branded links.

Examples:

  • example.com
  • go.example.com
  • links.example.com
Important:
If your main website is already hosted on your primary domain, consider using a dedicated subdomain for URL shortening instead.

Step 4: Empty Short Domain Option

If your domain will be used only for URL shortening and does not host a website or application, you can enable the Empty Short Domain option.

Option Recommended For
Enabled Domains dedicated exclusively to branded short links.
Disabled Domains that already host an existing website or application.

Step 5: Select Your Expected Monthly Volume

Choose the option that best represents the approximate number of branded links you expect to create each month.

Providing an estimated usage helps SPRL prepare your domain for expected traffic and future growth.

Step 6: Submit Your Domain

After completing the required information:

  1. Review your settings.
  2. Click Configure this Domain.
  3. Wait while SPRL validates your request.

Once the request is accepted, you'll receive the DNS records required to complete the setup.

  • Allow time for DNS propagation before troubleshooting.
  • Test your branded links after activation.

Troubleshooting

I entered the wrong domain

Correct the domain before completing the DNS configuration, or remove it and add the correct domain again.

I don't see any DNS records

DNS records are provided after your domain has been successfully submitted for configuration.

Can I use my existing website domain?

Yes. However, if your website is already active, using a dedicated subdomain is generally recommended.

Why isn't my domain active yet?

Your domain must first complete DNS verification and SSL activation before it becomes available for creating short links.
