Troubleshooting Domain Setup

Resolve common custom domain issues.

Overview

Most custom domain setup issues are caused by incorrect DNS configuration or DNS propagation delays. This guide helps you identify common problems, understand their causes, and resolve them so your branded domain can be activated successfully.

Before making any changes, allow sufficient time for DNS propagation after updating your records.

Good to Know:
Many domain setup issues resolve automatically once DNS propagation has completed. Avoid making repeated DNS changes while waiting for verification.

Common Domain Setup Issues

Issue Possible Cause
Domain not verifying Incorrect or incomplete DNS records.
Verification pending DNS propagation is still in progress.
SSL not activated Domain verification has not completed.
Branded links not working Domain setup is incomplete or inactive.
HTTPS security warning SSL certificate has not been issued yet.

Problem: Domain Verification Failed

If your domain cannot be verified, SPRL was unable to confirm the required DNS configuration.

Things to check:

  • Confirm that every DNS record exactly matches the values provided by SPRL.
  • Verify that you updated the correct domain or subdomain.
  • Ensure you saved the DNS changes.
  • Wait for DNS propagation if the records were recently updated.

Problem: Verification Is Still Pending

A pending status usually means your DNS records have not yet propagated across the internet.

Recommendation Reason
Wait for propagation DNS changes typically require time to become visible worldwide.
Avoid editing records repeatedly Frequent changes may extend propagation time.
Verify the correct DNS zone Ensure the records were added to the intended domain.

Problem: SSL Is Not Active

SSL certificates are issued only after successful domain verification.

If SSL has not been activated:

  • Confirm that the domain status is Verified.
  • Allow additional time for SSL provisioning.
  • Ensure DNS records have not been modified after verification.

Problem: Branded Links Do Not Work

If your branded links are not redirecting correctly, review the overall domain configuration.

Check Action
Domain Status Ensure the domain is active.
Verification Confirm ownership has been verified.
SSL Verify HTTPS has been activated.
DNS Records Review the DNS configuration for accuracy.

Problem: Browser Shows a Security Warning

A browser security warning usually indicates that HTTPS is not yet available for your branded domain.

Possible reasons include:

  • SSL activation is still pending.
  • Domain verification has not completed.
  • The browser is accessing an HTTP version instead of HTTPS.

Problem: Wrong Domain Was Added

If you accidentally configured the wrong domain or subdomain:

  1. Remove the incorrect domain from your account if appropriate.
  2. Add the correct domain.
  3. Configure the new DNS records generated by SPRL.
  4. Wait for verification again.

DNS Propagation Delays

DNS propagation times vary between providers. Even after saving your records, some DNS servers may continue using older information until propagation completes.

Stage Typical Behaviour
Immediately After Saving Some visitors may still receive old DNS information.
During Propagation Verification may remain pending.
After Propagation Verification and SSL activation proceed automatically.

Best Practices

  • Copy every DNS value exactly as provided.
  • Allow up to 24 hours for DNS propagation.
  • Use a dedicated subdomain if your main website is already live.
  • Avoid duplicate or conflicting DNS records.
  • Test your branded domain after SSL activation completes.
  • Do not repeatedly modify DNS settings while waiting for verification.

Troubleshooting Checklist

Question Verified?
Was the correct domain added?
Were all DNS records copied exactly?
Have DNS changes been saved?
Has sufficient time been allowed for propagation?
Has domain verification completed?
Is SSL active?

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my domain still pending after several hours?

DNS propagation times vary between providers. In many cases, propagation completes within 24 hours.

Can I modify DNS records while verification is pending?

Yes, if corrections are required. However, unnecessary changes may restart propagation and delay verification.

Why are my branded links returning errors?

Ensure your domain has been verified, SSL has been activated, and the setup has completed successfully.

What is the most common setup mistake?

The most common issue is entering incorrect DNS record values or configuring the wrong domain or subdomain.

Tip: If troubleshooting a domain issue, change only one setting at a time. After each change, allow enough time for DNS propagation before making further adjustments. This makes it much easier to identify the actual cause of the problem.
