Configure Root Domain Redirection

Learn how to redirect visitors from the root of your custom domain to another website or landing page using Root Domain Redirection.

Overview

Root Domain Redirection allows you to automatically redirect visitors who access the root of your custom domain (for example, example.com or go.example.com) to another website, landing page, or web application.

This feature is useful when your branded domain is primarily used for short links but you also want visitors who access the domain directly to be redirected to your main website instead of seeing a blank page or default response.

Good to Know:
Root Domain Redirection only affects visitors accessing the root of your custom domain. Existing short links and branded URLs continue to work normally and are not affected by this setting.

When Should You Use Root Domain Redirection?

Root Domain Redirection is ideal when your custom domain is dedicated to link shortening but you still want visitors to reach a useful destination when they manually enter the domain into their browser.

  • Redirect visitors to your company website.
  • Send users to a marketing landing page.
  • Forward visitors to an online store.
  • Direct traffic to your portfolio or blog.
  • Display a campaign homepage instead of an empty root page.

How It Works

  1. A visitor opens your custom domain without any short path (for example, brand.example.com).
  2. SPRL checks whether Root Domain Redirection has been configured.
  3. If enabled, the visitor is automatically redirected to your configured destination URL.
  4. If disabled, the default root page for your domain is displayed.

How to Configure Root Domain Redirection

  1. Sign in to your SPRL account.
  2. Navigate to Dashboard → Custom Domains.
  3. Select the custom domain you want to configure.
  4. Open the Root Domain Redirection section.
  5. Click Modify.
  6. Enter the destination URL.
  7. Choose an expiry date, if applicable.
  8. Save your changes.

Once saved, visitors accessing the root of your custom domain will automatically be redirected to the configured destination.

Common Questions

Will this affect my short links?

No. Root Domain Redirection only applies when visitors access the root of your custom domain. All existing short links continue to redirect to their original destinations.

Can I change the destination later?

Yes. You can modify the destination URL at any time from the Custom Domains section.

Can I disable Root Domain Redirection?

Yes. You may disable or remove the configuration whenever required.

Can I redirect to any website?

Yes. As long as the destination URL is valid and accessible, it can be used as the redirect target.

Can I set an expiry date?

Yes. You may configure an expiration date so the redirect automatically stops after the specified period.

Best Practices

  • Redirect visitors to your official website or primary landing page.
  • Use HTTPS destinations whenever possible.
  • Test the destination URL before enabling the redirect.
  • Review expiry dates periodically to ensure redirects remain active.
  • Update the destination when running new campaigns or changing websites.

Troubleshooting

Issue Possible Solution
